American composer Pulitzer Prize-winner John Coolidge Adams (born February 15, 1947)  is usually categorized as minimalist or post-minimalist although he has categorised himself in typically witty fashion as a ‘post-style’ composer. Minimalism offered the final solution to Adams’s creative dilemma. Many of Adams’s ideas in composition are a reaction to the philosophy of serialism and its depictions of “the composer as scientist.”
