The 36-year-old Colombian-born conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada has had two recordings reviewed in Gramophone. The first, in September 2011, was Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 2 with the Tonkünstler Orchestra (on Preiser Records), the second, in last year’s Awards issue, was Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique with the Tonkünstler Orchestra (on Oehms Classics).Gramophone‘s Ivan March wrote of the latter that ‘the symphony explodes: the guillotining of the work’s hero is presented here with elemental force, which Orozco-Estrada and his orchestra obviously relish.’ Orozco-Estrada is rapidly gathering conducting positions at orchestras around the world. Currently he is music director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra, and will become music director of Houston Symphony and chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra next season.
