Operatic baritone and director Sir Thomas Allen CBE has been announced as the recipient of the 2013 Queen’s Medal for Music. Allen is the ninth overall winner of the award. Past winners include Dame Emma Kirkby and Bryn Terfel, while the collective recipient for the 2012 was the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. The current Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, commented: “Sir Thomas was a top opera singer who has become not only a top opera director but also a major force in outreach and musical education.” The award will be presented to Allen by The Queen herself at a ceremony later this year.
