The primary musical focus of Rattle’s London residency will be a complete cycle of the Sibelius symphonies at the Barbican: the First and Second will be performed on February 10, the following day the Third and Fourth (along with the Violin Concerto, soloist Leonidas Kavakos) will be played with the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh symphonies following on February 12. The residency then moves to Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall for Helmut Lachenmann’s Tableau alongside Mahler’s Symphony No 2 (featuring soprano Kate Royal and mezzo Magdalena Kožená), the same programme will be given on the February 14 and 15. Running in parallel with the concerts will be an education project involving the creation of a new mixed-ability orchestra comprised of musicians aged 7-25 from across London. The musicians will attend workshops and debates about music, and will give two performances with Rattle on the podium. A life-changing opportunity…
