The Game Of Thrones concert is one of which named One World company’s ‘Operasodes’ concerts, a term coined by artistic director and composer Sung Jin Hong to describe a concert based on a particular TV show.
Commenting on the choice of Game Of Thrones as a concert inspiration, Hong said: “The show has all the drama, intrigue, and passion that operas have been providing us for centuries: seduction, obsession, deception, political manoeuvring, romance, heartbreak, incest – to name a few.”
The programme for the concert is full of operatic greats and the occasional dip into GoT-style fantasy fiction:
Richard Wagner: excerpts from Der Ring des Nibelungen
Annie Lennox: “Into the West” from The Lord of the Rings
Sergei Prokofiev: “Battle of the Ice” and “Field of the Dead” from Alexander Nevsky
Igor Stravinsky: from The Firebird
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: from The Maid of Orleans
Richard Strauss: excerpts from Elektra
Donizetti: excerpts from Lucrezia Borgia
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: excerpts from Idomeneo and La Clemenza di Tito
George Frideric Handel: excerpts from Rinaldo
