French conductor Pierre Boulez is particularly famed for his polished interpretations of classics, such as Gustav Mahler. In 2010, Boulez finished recording his 15-year, multi-orchestra Mahler cycle for Deutsche Grammophon. His earlier version of Das Klagende Lied is in 1970. Here is the record in the concert that opened the 2011 Salzburg festival, the performance has both spaciousness and finely focused detail and texture, with first-rate solo contributions from soprano Dorothea Röschmann and contralto Anna Larsson.
