The Chandos now release a SACD of Percy Grainger’s ‘Works for Large Chorus & Orchestra’.
George Percy Aldridge Grainger (8 July 1882 – 20 February 1961), known as Percy Grainger was anAustralian-born composer and pianist, however, much of Grainger’s working life was spent elsewhere. His works fall into two categories: original compositions and folk music arrangements. Besides these, he wrote and arranged many settings of other composers’ works. He rebelled against the disciplines of the central European tradition, largely rejecting conventional forms such as symphony, sonata, concerto and opera. His original compositions are miniatures, lasting between two and eight minutes. Chandos had issued a 19 CDs boxed set in 2011, to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death. The sound quality of the boxset CDs, most performances overall and production are outstanding – some of the best that Chandos has offered.
