George William John Benjamin (born 31 January 1960) is a British composer of classical music. He is also a conductor, pianist and teacher. Since the 1980s he has fulfilled a number of large commissions, including Sudden Time (for orchestra), Three Inventions (for chamber orchestra) andAntara (for ensemble and electronics, realised at IRCAM and the first composition ever published using the Sibelius notation program). The universally acclaimed opera Written On Skin is the second collaboration between George Benjamin and Martin Crimp after their similarly lauded one-act opera, Into the Little Hill. This is a landmark in British opera.
