German conductor and composer Otto Klemperer (14 May 1885 – 6 July 1973) is widely regarded as one of the leading conductors of the 20th century. In 1910, Klemperer had specially assisted Mahler in the premiere of his Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand. Klemperer’s performances often maintain great intensity, and are richly detailed. This 11-CD collection showcases four of Mozart’s most celebrated operas, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte and Die Zauberflöte, it’s for EMI Classics celebrating the 40th anniversary of Otto Klemperer’s death. Featuring a host of star performers, including Lucia Popp as Despina, Elisabeth Söderström as Countess Almaviva and Nicolai Gedda as Tamino, these classic recordings demonstrate Klemperer’s supreme understanding of Mozart’s operas.
