The Del Sol Quartet is a string quartet based in San Francisco, California. Del Sol is known for actively working with living composers from a wide range of cultural perspectives, and recording and performing exclusively 20th and 21st century music. This CD from Sono Luminus included composers —Gabriela Lena Frank, Lou Harrison, José Evangelista, Reza Vali and Elena Kats-Chernin. Gabriela Lena Frank and Lou Silver Harrison are American composers, José Evangelista is a Spanish composer, Reza Vali is an Iranian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin was born in Tashkent, they all trained in the Western European tradition, reach back to ancient and traditional folk music sources and cultures from Peru, Turkey, Spain, Iran, and Uzbekistan in creating vibrant new music for string quartet. The five contemporary composers on this CD are deeply tied to the Western European music tradition–especially its system of notation–they draw on ancient and traditional folk music from four corners of the world and make it new by incorporating techniques such as inventive intonations or heterophony.
