The opening chords of Beethoven Symphonies 5&7 are some of the most recognised in the history of classical music. This is a wonderful new recording, the new diptych of Beethoven’s 5th and 7th symphonies was done during a live concert in Carnegie Hall in 2011, but only released recently from radio recordings on Gardiner’s own Soli Deo Gloria label with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. The CD sounds as explosive and invigorating as it surely must have done at the premiere. Writing in BBC Music Magazine, Erik Levi said: ‘John Eliot Gardiner brings tremendous rhythmic drive and irresistible forward momentum to both Symphonies and revels in the sheer audacity of Beethoven’s orchestration, enhanced by the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique’s expert use of period instruments.’ This sounds like a totally unedited live performance and be live in every sense of the word.
