Masaaki Suzuki is a Japanese organist, harpsichordist and conductor, and the founder and musical director of the Bach Collegium Japan. He directs this baroque orchestra recording Bach’s complete cantatas for BIS records, and he is also currently recording Bach’s complete works for harpsichord and is one of the few keyboardplayers to have recorded all four books of Bach’s Clavier-Übung. Suzuki has commenced a project to record Bach’s complete sacred cantatas on the BIS label from 1995. He was just awarded the 2012 Bach Prize by the Royal Academy of Music. The three cantatas on this recording come from the first half of the 1730s and clearly show Bach’s affinity for instrumental colour and expressive melodies rich in syncopation and suspensions.
