The name is Sanctiandree.

The University of St Andrews is launching a new record label, called Sanctiandree, to profile St Salvator’s Chapel Choir and their Music Director Tom Wilkinson.

The initial aim is to release a new recording every six months, with the first entitled ‘Salvator Mundi: The Purcell Legacy’. The debut album features the music of Henry Purcell, John Blow, Jeremiah Clark, and the world premiere recording of an anthem called ‘Hear me O God’ by William Jackson of Exeter (1730-1803). Jackson’s anthem was recently rediscovered in Gerald Finzi’s private collection, bequeathed to the university in 1956, as Tom Wilkinson explains: ‘William Jackson of Exeter was an organist and composer active in the late 18th century. It is possible to trace a direct teacher/pupil lineage all the way to Purcell, a century earlier. His music, unjustly neglected today, is charming, quirky, and may be the earliest English music to exhibit the Classical style. I tend to think of it as the kind of music Purcell might have written if he had lived 100 years later. Gerald Finzi clearly rated him very highly: his pioneering collection of early music, held by the University, includes many volumes.’

Sanctiandree will be launched with a concert on April 12 in St Salvator’s Chapel, University of St Andrews, and the CD will be released on April 20. For further information visit:stsalvatorschapelchoir.co.uk.
